Hurricanes in GTA 6? What's actually confirmed about the weather
Set in a fictional, Florida-inspired state, Grand Theft Auto VI has fans convinced hurricanes and tornadoes are coming to Vice City. But the honest answer is more complicated: a leaked retailer listing points to dynamic storms that affect gameplay, while a 2023 insider claim says Rockstar cut extreme weather entirely. Neither has been confirmed by Rockstar.
The only weather Rockstar has actually shown is what's in the two official trailers: rain, wind, moody storm skies, and detailed water. Everything beyond that is leak or speculation. Here's how to tell the two apart.
What a leaked listing says about dynamic weather
The strongest hint that weather will be more than set dressing comes from a product listing on KaBuM!, a Brazilian e-commerce retailer, which described a feature set in unusual detail. As reported by Sportskeeda and others, the listing billed the game's weather as "Realistic Dynamic Weather: Storms and time changes that alter physics and gameplay."
That phrasing matters. It suggests weather with mechanical consequences — driving through a thunderstorm or navigating flooded streets carrying real handling and visibility penalties rather than just looking wet. It would build on the weather immersion Rockstar set in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The same listing, per Dexerto and GamingBolt, also referenced a graphics engine with "Global Illumination with Advanced Ray Tracing" for reflections on cars and water, plus native PS5 development and PS5 Pro optimization for more stable frame rates. Tie ray tracing to dynamic weather and you get wet roads reflecting storm light, puddles forming in real time, and visibility dropping in heavy rain.
One crucial caveat: this is a retailer's marketing copy, not an official Rockstar spec sheet. Store listings are frequently written from press bullet points, embargoed material, or educated guesses, and they get things wrong. Treat it as a strong lead, not gospel.
The claim that Rockstar scrapped hurricanes and tornadoes
Cutting against the hype is an older report. On November 17, 2023, the insider account "Rockstar Universe" replied to a fan asking for hurricanes and tornadoes and claimed the studio had already scrapped extreme weather, as covered by Sportskeeda and ScreenRant.
It could be tech limitations, it could be something else.
That was the insider's own guess at the reason — they did not claim to know why, or at what point in development the feature was dropped. It's a secondhand claim from an unofficial source, also reported by ComicBook, and Rockstar has never addressed it. Take it as a rumor, not a fact.
Dynamic weather and extreme weather are not the same claim
This is where the "contradiction" mostly dissolves. The two reports are talking about different things:
- Dynamic weather — rain, storms, shifting time of day, and their effect on driving and visibility. This is what the leaked listing describes, and it's plausible.
- Extreme weather — full-blown hurricanes and tornadoes with large-scale destruction. This is the feature the 2023 insider says was cut.
A game can absolutely ship with storms that soak the map and hammer your handling while never simulating a category-five hurricane tearing the roof off buildings. So "dynamic weather is in" and "extreme weather was cut" can both be true at once. What you should not do is read either leak as a confirmation that hurricanes are in the game.
What Rockstar has actually shown
The only weather that's genuinely confirmed is what appears in the official trailers. The first trailer (December 5, 2023) and second trailer (May 6, 2025) both show rain, wind, dense cloud cover, storm-lit skies, and richly detailed water and ocean interaction. That's visible, on-the-record evidence of a serious weather system — but no hurricane or tornado has ever appeared in official footage.
It's easy to see why fans expect the extreme stuff. GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, a stand-in for Florida, complete with the Leonida Keys, the Everglades-like Grassrivers, and Port Gellhorn. Florida is real-world hurricane country, so tropical storms fit the setting perfectly — but a fitting setting isn't a confirmed feature.
The bottom line
- Confirmed: a detailed weather system with rain, wind, storms, and advanced water, shown across both official trailers.
- Leaked (unofficial): a retailer listing describing dynamic weather that alters physics and gameplay, plus ray tracing and PS5 Pro optimization.
- Rumored cut (unofficial): hurricanes and tornadoes, per a 2023 insider — reason unknown, unconfirmed by Rockstar.
- Not confirmed: any playable hurricane or tornado. Anyone stating otherwise is going beyond the evidence.
GTA 6 is currently slated for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, so there's still room for Rockstar to detail its weather tech before launch. Until it does, treat hurricanes as a fan wish and a fitting rumor — not a confirmed feature.
