GTA 6 physical edition has no disc, and some stores won't stock it
The boxed retail copy of Grand Theft Auto VI will ship without a disc, and at least two independent retailers say they won't stock it as a result. Rockstar has confirmed the physical edition contains only a download code inside the box, making the packaged version functionally identical to a digital purchase.
The game launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, priced at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Pre-orders opened on June 25, with pre-loading available from November 12.
Which retailers are refusing to stock it
Video Games Plus (VGP), a Canadian retailer with a long-standing reputation among physical-game collectors, was among the first to say it would not carry the game, citing a standing company policy. The store said it does not carry "physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code," and added it would gladly stock a version that included an actual disc.

U.S. independent store Loot Box Gaming took the same stance, framing it as a matter of respecting customers. As reported by RockstarINTEL, the store said: "If a product can't honor the people who pay their hard earned money to purchase it, we have no business selling it."
According to ComicBook, other specialty sellers have voiced doubts too: Seattle's Pink Gorilla questioned whether it would carry the code-in-box release, and rental service GameFly drew a pointed contrast with Marvel's Wolverine, which ships on a disc. Larger chains, however, are reportedly still on board — ComicBook reports that Best Buy, Target and GameStop plan to sell the boxed version.
Why a code-in-a-box matters
A disc-free box removes most of the practical advantages of buying physical. There is nothing to resell or trade in, no way to lend or gift the game once the code is redeemed, and no offline installation for players on slow or data-capped connections, who must download the full game regardless. For preservation advocates and collectors, it also means one of the biggest releases of the generation effectively has no lasting physical artifact.

Is a disc version coming? The reports conflict
Whether a true disc release ever arrives is genuinely unclear, and the reporting contradicts itself. Rockstar has not made a formal announcement, but a Rockstar Support response cited by outlets indicated a physical copy would follow "in the following months." A widely shared leak from Polish outlet PPE.pl, attributed to a leaker who correctly called the lack of a day-one disc, points to a December 2026 disc release — but that timing is unconfirmed by Rockstar.
Complicating matters, VGC has reported that Take-Two denied it was planning a physical version after the initial launch date. Treat any specific disc date as a rumor until Rockstar or Take-Two commits to one on the record.
What it means for buyers
If you want GTA 6 on launch day, the boxed edition offers no meaningful benefit over buying digitally, beyond owning the packaging. Collectors set on a disc may prefer to wait and see whether a genuine physical version materializes, keeping in mind that no such release is confirmed. Anyone relying on a disc to avoid a large day-one download will need to plan for the full install regardless of how they buy.
