Will GTA 6 hit 60fps on console? Leaks and experts disagree
A leaked Polish MediaMarkt pre-order listing that credited Grand Theft Auto VI with "Performance and Quality" graphics modes has reignited hopes that Rockstar's next open world will finally run at 60 frames per second on console. But Rockstar has confirmed nothing about how the game will run, and the experts who have picked apart its trailers are not convinced a 60fps mode will exist at launch.
The short version: a retailer leak points to two graphics modes, one respected analysis argues 60fps is unrealistic even on PS5 Pro, and a separate insider claim says a performance mode is coming but maybe not on day one. None of it is official. Here is what each piece of evidence actually says.
What the retailer leak actually said
The spark was a pre-order page from MediaMarkt's Polish arm, spotted on June 24, a day before pre-orders were due to open. It listed GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with two selectable graphics modes labeled "Performance" and "Quality."
Crucially, the listing never put a number on either mode. It did not say Performance means 60fps, nor what Quality would target. The same text also mentioned DualSense haptics, faster SSD load times, and three editions (Standard, Special, and Collector's) — the kind of boilerplate that suggests placeholder copy, which could easily change when official pre-orders go live.
So the leak is real, but the 60fps read on it is an assumption. A "Performance" mode can just as easily mean a 40fps target as a 60fps one — a distinction that turns out to be the whole debate.
Why Digital Foundry is skeptical of 60fps
The most-cited counterweight comes from Digital Foundry, the technical-analysis outlet whose frame-rate breakdowns are a genre standard. Reacting to the GTA 6 trailers, DF's Alex Battaglia zeroed in on the game's ray-traced global illumination — the lighting system that gives Vice City much of its look.
You can't get rid of Ray-tracing Global Illumination, it's inherent to the way the game works.
Battaglia's argument, reported by RockstarINTEL and GTA BOOM, is that doubling the frame rate would force Rockstar to slash resolution so far that the game would lose its visual identity — the trailer footage already appears to render at 30fps and barely above 1080p. On that basis, DF does not expect a 60fps mode when the game ships.
The clip above is the trailer Digital Foundry and others have been analyzing frame by frame. It is worth stressing that trailers are not gameplay running on final retail hardware, so any read of resolution or frame rate from them is informed guesswork, not a spec sheet.
The CPU problem, not the GPU
A related strand of analysis argues the real bottleneck is the CPU rather than raw graphics power. To hit 60fps, everything the game simulates — NPC density, traffic, physics, streaming and world logic — has to refresh in half the time, and technical write-ups point out that even the PS5 Pro offers only a modest CPU bump over the base PS5. Its headline gains — better GPU horsepower, ray-tracing acceleration and PSSR upscaling — mostly help image quality, not the simulation load a 60fps mode would strain.
The consensus verdict from that camp, echoed by Push Square, is that a locked 30fps at launch is the safe bet, with a 40fps mode for 120Hz displays a more realistic "performance" option than a true 60.
What Rockstar's history tells us
None of this would be surprising. Rockstar has shipped its recent flagship games at 30fps on console and added higher frame rates only later, if at all. GTA 5 eventually gained a 60fps option through its enhanced and next-gen re-releases, years after the original launch.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the cautionary tale: it stayed locked at 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles for years, and a proper 60fps unlock only arrived well after release. If that pattern repeats, GTA 6 players could be looking at 30fps first and a 60fps patch somewhere down the road.
The insider claim pushing the other way
Not every signal is pessimistic. On June 29, the Rock and Borys podcast, as reported by TheGamer via Insider Gaming, cited a "single, but very reliable" source close to Rockstar claiming GTA 6 will indeed offer both a 30fps quality mode and a 60fps performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The catch is timing. The same source reportedly said the performance mode may not be ready at launch and could arrive in a post-release update, and that Xbox Series S is locked to 30fps with Rockstar still "fighting" to add a performance option there. The podcasters themselves stressed they are "not 100 percent sure" the mode will be available on day one.
Treat this as an unverified rumor. It comes from an anonymous source relayed second-hand, and it directly contradicts the analysts on whether 60fps is even feasible — a disagreement worth keeping in view rather than resolving prematurely.
The bottom line
Here is the one hard fact underneath all the speculation: Rockstar has not confirmed a single thing about GTA 6's graphics modes or target frame rates. The retailer listing is a leak, the 60fps insider tip is a rumor, and the 30fps skepticism is expert opinion drawn from trailers, not retail code.
What is confirmed is the release date. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed on July 17 that GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, and will not be delayed again after slipping from a planned 2025 window. The definitive answer on 60fps will come from Rockstar's own tech specs closer to that date — everything before it is a question, not an answer.
