GTA 6 Could Help Make 2026 Gaming's Biggest Year, Analysts Say
US consumers are on track to spend a record $62.8 billion on video games in 2026, according to market-research firm Circana — and the analysts behind the forecast credit two headline drivers above all: the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6 and the continued sales momentum of the Nintendo Switch 2.
If the projection holds, it would edge past the previous all-time high of $61.7 billion set in 2021, making 2026 the biggest year for US game spending on record. The figure covers the US market Circana tracks — hardware, software and accessories, plus subscription spending — not global revenue.
The forecast represents roughly 3% growth over the estimated $60.7 billion spent in 2025. Modest as that sounds, it would mark a rebound for an industry that spent much of 2025 shedding jobs.
GTA 6 has the highest purchase intent Circana has ever tracked
Circana says Grand Theft Auto 6 carries the highest “purchase intent” it has ever measured — a proprietary metric that gauges how many players say they plan to buy a game. That demand is expected to ripple well beyond the game itself.
The firm expects GTA 6 to pull spending across hardware, accessories and subscriptions as players upgrade consoles, buy controllers and headsets, and sign up for services to be ready at launch.
Switch 2 and subscriptions round out the case
GTA 6 is not carrying 2026 alone. Circana points to the Nintendo Switch 2 — already the fastest-selling console of all time — heading into its second year on the market, where strong first-year momentum typically carries into a deeper software lineup.
Subscriptions are the third pillar. Services such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass helped prop up 2025 spending and are expected to keep growing in 2026.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella framed the year as one of both upside and uncertainty.
The US video game market in 2026 offers significant opportunities and risks. While there are challenges in hardware, a strong lineup of software and engagement in subscriptions indicate an exciting year ahead.
Not everyone is convinced
The record forecast lands after a brutal stretch for the industry. 2025 brought significant layoffs across Microsoft, Square Enix, Ubisoft and Riot Games, which is part of why a record year would count as a meaningful rebound rather than business as usual.
And some analysts are wary of pinning too much on a single release. NYU Stern professor and games-industry analyst Joost van Dreunen pushed back on the hype, cautioning that GTA 6 alone will not fix the industry's underlying problems.
There's even a somewhat naive expectation that this one release will reverse the industry's current direction. It won't.
When GTA 6 arrives
Whether 2026 breaks the record hinges largely on GTA 6 landing on schedule. Rockstar Games has confirmed a November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, a date Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has reaffirmed after two earlier delays.
The game is priced at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. With the launch falling in mid-November, it sits squarely inside the holiday window — the exact stretch that will decide whether Circana's record forecast comes true.
